The Russian Church
When a person from the West enters a Russian church everything seems alien. Centuries of intellectual enlightenment have been ignored and the worst aspects of the worship of images is obvious. But if we suspend our natural cynicism and absorb the atmosphere for a moment we may sense something lost in the West: The feeling of being in the presence of a great mystery.
Church singing
Church singing, which stimulates a prayerful spirit and instructs and strengthens the believer in his faith, occupies a special place in the spiritual life of the Russian Orthodox Church. Church choral music and prayer are indivisible, for the person who sings a spiritual song is also uttering a prayer.
