Dr Zhivago – The North America View of Russia
Many North Americans know of Russia from one film: Dr Zhivago. The book, written by the famous Russian poet and author, Boris Pasternak, was made into a movie in 1965 by the director/producer David Lean. It starred Omar Sharif as Zhivago, Julie Christie as Lara, his love and mistress, and Geraldine Chaplin (daughter of Charlie Chaplin) as Zhivago's wife. Pasternak received a Nobel Prize for the book in 1958, but before glasnost he could not accept it. He died in 1960, and his son accepted the award in 1989.
