Crossroads of Cultures
The Multi-National Experience: Where Do I Belong?
Have you ever thought that too much cross-cultural communication can be a bit of a double-edged sword? You can finally end up feeling alien in both worlds. "Culture shock" abroad might not be that painful, because it comes as something more or less expected. Whereas coming home and finding you’re a stranger there can be really frustrating. After having lived somewhere else you’re no longer the same. You start asking yourself a question: "Where do I belong?" At least this is what may happen when your traveling experiences take place when you are immature and change together with your new surroundings.
Landscapes of Desire: the MIR Centre for Peace
The story begins with a walk by two beautiful rivers: on a bluff above the Kootenay and Columbia rivers, in the province of British Columbia, stands a two storey red brick home which once belonged to a Russian pacifist sect called the Doukhobors who were helped in coming to Canada by Lev Tolstoy. In the fields around the home there are the overgrown orchards and garden areas which once defined a vast communal enterprise.

Being Russian
Women in Novodevichy Convent
In 1524 Grand Prince Vasily III founded a monastery which became a new link in the defensive ring of Moscow watch-monasteries, such as Donskoy, Danilov, Simonov, Novosspasky and Androniev. But all of those were friaries; the new one was to become a nunnery. It was called the Novodevichy monastery ("novo" means "new") because the Devichy St. Alexey monastery had already existed since the 14th century and it was situated not far from the new one.
Short notes from a young geographer
Hello! This is truly an essay from a Moscow State University Geography Faculty student. I want to describe our life here. Probably it doesn't differ from any other student life, but I believe it's interesting, special and lively.

Spoken English
Agreement, disagreement and ... the English soul
The way people agree or disagree in an argument or discussion varies in different languages. A lot here depends on the national cultural and traditional background of the speaker. The English are not as straightforward in expressing their opinion as Russians are, for example. The word which describes the English way of speaking and behaving in the best way is probably the word "reserved".
