The holdings of the MHS encompass millions of rare and unique documents and artifacts vital to the study of American history. Of particular interest to scholars of US-Russia relations, are materials related to the Adams Family. The Adams Family Papers manuscript collection comprises over a quarter million documents, including letters and diaries, of John Quincy Adams, the first U.S. Minister to Russia and the sixth president of the United States, as well as several generations of Adamses. Included on this site are the Diaries of John Qunicy Adams (http://www.masshist.org/jqadiaries/) as well as excerpts from his earlier diaries during his teenage years in Russia (http://www.masshist.org/exhibitions/jqa.cfm). An American Dynasty: The Adams Family Adams National Historical Park (http://www.nps.gov/adam/) tells the story of four generations of the Adams family (from 1720 to 1927). The park has two main sites: the Birthplaces of 2nd U.S. President John Adams and 6th U.S. President John Quincy Adams, and Peacefield including the "Old House," home to four generations of the Adams family, and the Stone Library which contains more than 14,000 historic volumes. Of particular interest is the biography of John Quincy Adams (http://www.nps.gov/adam/jqa-bio-page-3.htm) The Amistad Case - John Quincy Adams made a landmark defense of captured Africans on the ship "Amistad" who were bound for North America as slaves. These websites provide a rich collection of materials related to this event, which bolstered the abolitionist cause in the United States.
