Teen-oriented Internet Web Sites

By John R. Harrington, EFL Fellow, US Embassy in Moscow

TEEN ADVICE ONLINE
www.teenadviceonline.org
This web site is one of the best. It contains a huge amount of material that can be adapted for use in the classroom. It is easy to use, the information it contains is updated weekly, and it addresses a vast number of teenage issues. Like many other teenage web sites, some of the topics it offers are sexually explicit. Its subject matter ranges from harmless topics such as pets and etiquette to controversial topics such as sexual abuse, drugs, and homosexuality.

SEVENTEEN
www.seventeen.com
Seventeen, a popular American print magazine for teenage girls, operates this web site. It contains articles on fashion, beauty, sex and the body, love, "real life," and celebrities. It also offers games, quizzes, and horoscopes. Recent articles included "How to Create Those Cute Ponytails," "32 Different Hair Styles" and the following quizzes: "Are You Unforgettable?" "What's the Best Fall Fashion Trend for You?" and "What's Your Party Personality?"

TEEN HEALTH CENTRE
www.teenhealthcentre.com/teens/index.htm
This Canadian site includes excellent advice to help teenagers stay healthy inside and out. It features topics related to health, self-esteem, emotional problems, teenage relationships, and much more.

DR. DREW
www.drdrew.com
This web site offers advice to young people from 14-24 about health-related topics, relationships, drug and alcohol abuse, violence and many other subjects. The Frequently Answered Questions section of this site is particularly interesting, though many of the questions and answers it contains are too provocative to be discussed in the secondary school classrooms of most countries (e.g., "Do condoms work underwater?", "Do women always bleed the first time?", "Can banana peels make you high?").

GIRL SITE NETWORK
www.girlsite.org
Begun in 1997, this site has thousands of members who participate in chats, web journalism, pen pal programs, community betterment through volunteerism, and other activities. Information is available about beauty tips, fashion, celebrities, and numerous other topics of interest to teenage girls.

TEEN GROWTH
www.teengrowth.com/
This unusually well designed site was created by a team of teenagers, doctors, and teachers who are "committed to improving the lives of adolescents." Common topics include the body, emotions, health, friends, sports, danger, school, family, and sex.

CYBER ISLE
www.cyberisle.org
This interactive web site is intended to look and feel like a teens-only island with places and locations where youth might "hang out," such as beaches, a dance club, etc. On the island, teens can find health information, interactive lifestyle assessment programs, simulations, links, games, and participate in online discussion clubs.

ROMANCE 101
www.rom101.com/
How do you know if you're really in love? Read the stories and advice from teenagers who have been in love. In addition to quizzes and games, this site has candid, heartfelt and caring information about romance and falling in love.

SECRET ADMIRER
www.SecretAdmirer.com/
This is an interesting web site for teenagers who have access to the Internet. At this site, teenagers can send an anonymous e-mail message to someone they like, telling them about their feelings. The person will get the message, but the only way s/he can learn the identity of his or her secret admirer is to go to the Secret Admirer site and send a message to that person.

DATING PATTERNS ANALYZER
www.jimidog.com/dpa/dpaform.html
The Dating Patterns Analyzer allows teenagers to rate how important each physical or personality quality is in each of the people they've dated so they can spot the trends in the teens they're attracted to.

CYBERTEENS
cyberteens.com/
This attractive and well organized site has won several awards. It offers discussion groups on such themes as "Getting to Know You," "In Style," "Animals and Pets," "The Arts," "Sports," and "Technology." Games are also available, as well as homework help and information about college choices and careers.

eCRUSH
www.ecrush.com/
Find out if someone you like likes you, without having to risk the possibility of rejection. You can read about success stories, horror dates, and check out the fortune teller's booth.

BOLT
www.bolt.com/
Bolt is one of the Internet's most popular "hang outs" for American secondary school and university students. This web site allows teenagers to express their views about whatever subject they wish, from kissing to current events, from classroom exams to the latest CDs.

FOR TEENAGERS: Marriage is Forever
www.bygpub.com/books/tg2rw/chap10excerpt.htm
This is a chapter from the book The Teenagers Guide to the Real World. It doesn't tell teens what to do, but gives them information so they can make their own decisions. It includes a chart on the advantages and disadvantages of marriage.
